Stoma Care In Infants : tips and trick to smooth and comfort them while replacing a new bag.

Purpose : 

To share with Stoma Nurse and Ostomate carer especially parents how to handle infants while cleaning and changing infants stoma bag. Infants usually will react differently to the one who approached them other then their parents, especially the nurse who always change in shift and duties as a normal reaction to stranger and it’s take time to get bounding. However for the parents, it is also a challenging for them especially at home, even the babies comfort with them we can’t stop babies from moving and touching the bag. This method is important to make sure the stoma bag can long lasting, infant’s remain comfortable and prevent complications.

Method:
 

Establishment a good rapport, to built up the infants confident, before the procedure is one of the methods that will be discussing in this presentation. The other tricks and tips is to attract the child while doing the cleaning, emptying or changing the bags. Choosing the right time which infants less active such as after the meal time or nearly to bedtime where they are more in calm mood.

 
Result:

This evidence based practice work to most of the stoma nurse at ward and at the same time this tips and tricks can be shared to the parents or carer for discharged planning. This method can reduce the used of stoma bag quantity in infants and complications caused by active baby movement and peristomal skin problem due to frequent bag changing
